Short info

I study migration and asylum policy in multilevel governance contexts, focusing on how states manage mobility, crisis, and diversity. My work connects policy design, democratic accountability, and the everyday realities of rights and belonging.
Research

Pierre G. Van Wolleghem is a political scientist specializing in migration and asylum policy in multilevel governance contexts. His research bridges comparative politics, public policy, and methodology, with a focus on how states govern mobility, crisis, and diversity while upholding democratic accountability.

He works with a broad range of research methods, including inferential statistics, social network analysis, and experimental and quasi-experimental approaches. More recently, Pierre is training in simulation techniques, such as agent-based modelling and system dynamics. His research interests and methodological versatility are grounded in a commitment to rigorous, transparent, and well-designed empirical work.

Outreach

Pierre G. Van Wolleghem regularly engages with the public at large, be it through seminars in schools or social media posts. He maintains a website (https://euromigresearch.wordpress.com/) as a platform to share publications, teaching materials, and reflections on ongoing research. He is committed to making complex policy issues accessible, contributing to public debates through talks, open-access publications, and collaborations with civil society and policy actors. His research has been featured in international academic networks and practitioner forums focused on migration governance and policy evaluation.

Pierre also integrates dissemination into his teaching practice, encouraging students to think critically about the intersection of research and real-world policymaking. He is currently exploring new formats for communicating research—including podcasts and infographics—to foster dialogue between researchers, civil society, and decision-makers.

Teaching

Pierre considers teaching as a fully-fledged part of his research activities. Teaching is not only a tool to transfer information to younger minds; it is also a way to reflect upon one’s own knowledge. Searching for the best ways to explain complex phenomena enriches the experience of the researcher and increases their ability to convey meaning.

He is a passionate and approachable lecturer, with experience in delivering classes on different subjects to different audiences. He has notably taught in international MAs in Italy, supervised BA and MA dissertations both in Italy and Norway. He has also directed course on European Union (EU) politics, on the politics of international protection, and on migration governance and policy.
