Tematic areas for master thesis projects:
Formation of nanoparticles in surfactant systems and other colloidal systems
In colloidal systems chemical reactions (for example the precipitation of particulate material) will partly be governed by the size of the colloidal domains. Very often the product will be nanosized. By using surfactants a number of different surfactant aggregates may be formed, all within the "colloidal dimensions".
Possible project descriptions:
- Mapping of surfactant systems suitable as matrices for particle formation; what material(s) may be produced in the systems?
- Reactions in microemulsions (one type of surfactant systems); How to control the particle size?
- Reactions in microemulsions; Different strategies for the reduction of metal ions.
- "Recycling" of microemulsions; Can a surfactant system be used more than once for a given particle synthesis?
- "Nano-emulsions" as reaction media
The surfaktants systems and formed nanoparticles may be characterised by use of dynamic light scattering measurements (for particle size, surface charge etc.) Other experimental techniques like rheology, Langmuir-Blodgett deposition, electron microscopy, etc. may also be employed.
