Research
I have a wide-ranging interest in governance systems and the implications of artificial intelligence.
My research examines how liability rules, epistemic and ethical standards, and international regulatory coordination can drive the institutionalisation of safety-by-design as the default — rather than the exception — in high-risk domains such as health care.
This work is pursued, among other projects, through the interdisciplinary project SAFE-MED: Systemic Accountability Frameworks for the Medical AI Value Chain, a project developing governance tools for the most consequential and rapidly evolving frontiers of AI deployment.
Furthermore, I co-lead the research project 'Distribution of Liability in the Medical AI Value Chain', together with Professor Ernst Karner at the University of Vienna, Austria. This project is part of a collaboration between the European Centre of Tort and Insurance Law in Vienna and TRUST – The Norwegian Centre for Trustworthy AI.
In the European context, the EU is an important provider of premises for the content of future liability models. My work therefore includes analyses of EU regulations and their interplay with civil liabililty regimes.
I am affiliated with TRUST — The Norwegian Centre for Trustworthy AI — and serve as co-PI of the research stream Emergent Behaviour. I also serve as Associate Co-Director for International Relations in TRUST, and sit on TRUST's Board of Directors.

Another area of my research examines misinformation and disinformation in society, particularly as these problems are amplified by the use of artificial intelligence. This work is closely connected to my participation in the international research project TIDAL: Truth, Democracy and the Rule of Law, hosted by the University of Oslo and funded by the Research Council of Norway. My research focuses on the role liability law does, and should, play in addressing these information disorders, and which accountability mechanisms would be most effective in tackling the problem in a global context. My work in TIDAL builds upon my earlier research on discriminatory speech and legal responses to such speech in order to combat the phenomenon as a social problem - particularly in the context of social media.
