Short info
Research
Charalampos Tzoulis is Professor of Neurology and Neurogenetics at the University of Bergen and Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway. He serves as Director of the Neuro-SysMed Center of Excellence for Clinical Neurological Research (https://neuro-sysmed.no/), where he leads the clinical neurodegeneration program. He is also Head of the DECODE-PD Research Group (https://decode-pd.org/), and Director of the KG Jebsen Center for Parkinson's Disease (https://www.uib.no/en/parkinsonsdisease), the Mohn Center for Neuroprotection, and the Innovation Center for Neuroresilience (ICoN).
An internationally recognized expert in movement disorders and neurodegeneration, Prof. Tzoulis has made significant scientific contributions, to understanding the role of mitochondrial dysfunction, bioenergetics, and cellular vulnerability in Parkinson’s disease and related α-synucleinopathies. His work integrates molecular mechanisms, biomarker discovery, and translational neuroscience with innovative early- and late-phase clinical trials.
He currently leads a comprehensive research portfolio spanning Phase 1–3 clinical trials, as well as national platform-based multi-arm, multi-stage (MAMS) infrastructures such as SLEIPNIR and HYDRA, designed to accelerate the development of neuroprotective and disease-modifying therapies for Parkinson’s disease.
