Short info

I am currently the Head of The Teacher Education Center at the University of Bergen. I am also a professor of Nordic langauges/language didactics.

Research

In recent years, my research has focused on conditions for the use of Nynorsk as a written language, especially among adolescents and school pupils. The approach of this research is primarily sociolinguistic and subject-didactic, with perspectives from language contact research and bilingualism research, and I have combined various data sources (such as interviews, questionnaires, statistics and historical sources).

Previous research has mainly focused on language standardization, language norms and language policy, with studies of Nordic language purism, as well as studies on the relationship between language and nation. Additionaly, I have participated in projects on language and globalization, with publications on language use in the hip-hop environment and on the extent of imported words in Nordic newspapers.

I have been involved in a larger textbook project in Norwegian for secondary school, "Grip teksten", with publications in 2020 (Vg1), 2021 (Vg2) and 2022 (Vg3).

Currently, I am doing studies on regulatory texts related to teacher education.

I am a member of the Research Group in Nordic Languages and the Research Group in Nynorsk Written Culture. In addition, I am co-editor of the writing series Skriftkultur, which is published at NOASP.

I am also chair of the language policy commitee at the University of Bergen. The committe gives advice on the implementation and follow-up of the language policy guidelines.
