Research

Frode Ulvund's research interests includes religious policy, antisemitism, legal history, social control, and national identity formation in Norway and Scandinavia from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century. In recent years, his work has focused on religious minorities, religious policy, and representations of minorities (particularly Jews and Mormons) within national discourses. His research combines empirical source studies with theoretical perspectives on power, marginalization, and identity formation. In addition, he has contributed a range of articles and book chapters on penal law reforms, exclusionary mechanisms, religious freedom, and democratic exclusion. Ulvund has also worked on the history of outdoor life.

"Visions of a Better Past"

The work forms part of a broader project on radical religious print culture in Europe, 1750–1914. The study examines how the Norwegian Catholic newspaper St. Olaf (1889–1914) operated as a tool for religious mobilization and ideological resistance within a Protestant-dominated society. Through analysis of discourses on authority, historical narratives, and conspiracy theories, the article demonstrates how Catholic print in Scandinavia combined traditionalist rhetoric with radical critique. It argues that St. Olaf exemplifies a form of reactionary radicalism, challenging dominant norms while advocating a return to pre-Reformation religious and cultural frameworks.

The Berlin Antisemitism Controversy in Scandinavia

This project investigates how the so-called antisemitism controversy in Berlin around 1880 was reported and interpreted in Scandinavia at the time. It explores the reception of German antisemitic discourse in Scandinavian public spheres, examining how newspapers, intellectuals, and religious actors responded to and engaged with the debates surrounding antisemitism. The study aims to shed light on the transnational circulation of antisemitic ideas and the role of Scandinavian media and opinion-makers in shaping local understandings of the controversy.
