Dr Heiko Bratke worked as a trainee in Pediatric Endocrinology in Bremen, Germany, and has since 2007 been the leader of the Pediatric Endocrine Section of Haugesund Hospital.
He and his team have received several national awards for their excellence of diabetes care. In 2022, his team was awarded with the international SWEET Initiative's "Best improvement prize" for their significant and stable quality improvements in various areas and participating in national networks and initiating projects.
As board member of the Norwegian Childhood Diabetes Registry and the Norwegian Childhood Diabetes Study Group, he introduced carb counting into national treatment guidelines, and contributed actively to transferring the registry to its now digital version.
He was the leader of the Norwegian Pediatric Endocrine Working Group from 2016-20. He organized numerous national conferences and workshops within general pediatrics, pediatric endocrinology and pediatric diabetes, and has been an invited speaker nationally and internationally. With his contribution, a specialized patient record for youth with diabetes has been developed, which is currently implemented at almost all pediatric departments in his home country.
In 2023, he was the leader of the Norwegian educational program for pediatric endocrinology for pediatric trainees, and coordinates since 2022 the study programmes at the academic teaching hospital of Haugesund in his function as assistant Professor at the University of Bergen.Twice each year, groups of 12-20 students in the 8th and 9th semester (psychiatry, internal medicine, orthopedics, surgery, anestesia, obstetrics & gynecology and pediatrics) visit the institutions of the Fonna Health trust to get practical experience in clinical everyday work.
In 2021, Bratke was the recipient of the award for outstanding education from the K2 institute of the University of Bergen.
He is the author and co-author of national clinical practice guidelines in pediatric diabetes, pediatric endocrinology and neonatal endocrinology.
He serves on the Expert Advisory Group for the Regional Health Trusts’ purchasing department, responsbile for the reimbursement of diabetes technology in Norway.
