Research

Ragnar Fjelland (born 1947) is a Norwegian physicist and philosopher.

He took a master's degree in structural physics at NTH in 1972 and a magister artium in philosophy (former equivalent to the PhD) at the University of Tromsø in 1975. He was in the period 1979 - 1989 assistant professor and associate professor at the Department of Philosophy, University of Tromsø, and in the period 1993 - 2014 Professor of Theory of Science at the Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities and Department of Physics and Technology, University of Bergen.

In the period 1991 - 1999, Fjelland was a member of The National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT), and in the period 2008 - 2016 he was a member of the The Norwegian Board of Technology (NBT).

He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Konstanz, Germany, the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the University of California, Berkeley, USA, the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada, and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin, Germany.

Fjelland has written a number of academic articles on topics ranging from quantum mechanics to Goethe's theory of colours. He has contributed to numerous anthologies and has published several books within the field of theory of science and about technology, the environment, and ethics.
