What must the complaint contain?
In your complaint, you must describe why you are complaining. That is, what errors occurred and how this affected your performance on the exam or the grading of your answer. It is an advantage if you include when the error occurred and what you would like to see corrected.
You must include the name of the course, exam date, exam form, and your contact information. You send the complaint to post@uib.no.
What could be the outcome of the complaint?
If UiB believes that errors have been made that may have had an impact on your performance or on the grading decision, UiB will cancel the grade.
If the error can be corrected by grading your examination answer again, a new evaluation shall be carried out. If the error cannot be corrected by grading it again, you must take a new exam with new examiners. This is determined by the Universities and Colleges Act, Section 11-9 .
The outcome of a complaint is never that the examiner gives a more lenient assessment of the exam or test due to formal errors. The examiner can only assess the exam answer that is actually available and not what you could have achieved if the error had not occurred.
If the complaint is rejected, there will be no new exam or grading for the appellant.
How is the complaint processed?
The faculty is the first stop for complaints about formal errors. The faculty collects relevant information about the situation you are complaining about. This includes, for example, information and statements from the examination room, course coordinator, department, examiner, etc. Once the faculty has established a good case, they will assess whether a formal error has occurred that has affected your performance on the exam or the grading of your answer. If the faculty considers that this is the case, your complaint will be upheld.
If the faculty considers that no error has occurred, it will forward the case to the Central Appeals Committee at UiB. The letter the faculty sends contains an explanation of the case and the faculty's assessment. All documents in the case are attached, and the appellant will be sent a copy of the letter with attachments.
The Central Appeals Committee will evaluate the case and make a decision to either uphold or reject the complaint.
Withdraw complaint
A complaint about formal errors can be withdrawn as long as a decision has not been made in the case. Reasons for wanting to withdraw a complaint may, for example, be that the formal matter you have complained about has not affected the performance after all, or that you have taken it into account when reading the examiner's instructions.
To withdraw your complaint, you can send an email to post@uib.no requesting that the case be closed because you do not wish to uphold the complaint after all. You must state your name, course code and specify that you are withdrawing your complaint about a formal error in the exam in the email.
