OSCE exam in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bergen uses OSCE exams in its study programmes in medicine, pharmacy and dentistry. The OSCE format tests how you apply knowledge and skills in clinical situations through a structured, station-based exam.

What is an OSCE exam

OSCE stands for Objective Structured Clinical Examination. This type of exam assesses several aspects of your competence, including:

  • knowledge
  • clinical judgement
  • examination methods
  • ability to reason
  • problem solving
  • communication skills

The format gives a clear picture of how you apply knowledge and skills in practice.

How the exam is organised

An OSCE exam consists of multiple stations where you complete a specific task within a set time. You move from one station to the next in a structured sequence, and a signal tells you when to move on.

At each station, an examiner assesses your performance. During the exam, you go through all stations, and there may be short breaks along the way.

What you are tested on

Each station tests one or more skills. At some stations, you will speak with and possibly examine a patient or user. This may be a simulated patient or a trained actor.
