Nordic citizens
If you are a student from a Nordic country and you are staying in Norway for more than 6 months, you must report your move to Norway by visiting the Norwegian Tax Administration for ID verification and submit a change of address. This must be done no later than eight days after arrival in Norway. Go to Nordic Co-operation website for more information about Norwegian identification numbers.

Non-EU/EFTA citizens
If you are a Non-EU/EFTA citizen and you are staying in Norway for more than 6 months, you will be registered at the Norwegian Tax Administration after completing the registration with the police authorities*
*The letter with the ID number will be sent to your registered address by the Norwegian Tax Administration. It is extremely important that you bring your correct and complete address to the police appointment (check your housing contract). Otherwise, you will not be able to receive the letter from the Norwegian Tax Administration.

If you are staying in Norway for more than 6 months and have received a D number (temporary number), you may register your move to Norway to receive a Norwegian ID number.
EU and EFTA citizens
If you are an EU/EFTA citizens and you are staying in Norway for more than 2 semesters, you must register at the Norwegian Tax Administration after completing the SUA registration.

Difference between D number and Norwegian ID number
