Students' duty of confidentiality

All students who, during their studies, gain knowledge of personal information about individuals—such as patients or pupils—are bound by a duty of confidentiality.

What is the duty of confidentiality?

When you register for the semester in Studentweb, you must sign to confirm that you have read and accepted the University of Bergen’s (UiB) confidentiality declaration.

This duty of confidentiality is lifelong and continues even after you have completed your studies.

Legal basis for the duty of confidentiality

"A student who, in connection with their studies, gains knowledge of someone’s personal circumstances is bound by the same confidentiality rules that apply to professionals in the relevant field. Universities and colleges must prepare a confidentiality declaration to be signed by the relevant students.

Students who commit serious breaches of confidentiality may be expelled and lose the right to sit for exams under § 12-6."

Who is bound by confidentiality?

All students who may gain access to sensitive or personal information about individuals as a part of teaching or practical training are bound by confidentiality.

This includes, among others, all health and education-related study programs.

Special note on photos and social media

It is common to take photos of situations and surroundings you are in. Before you use your phone, remember that photos and videos are also covered by the duty of confidentiality—even for personal use. Students in programs with confidentiality obligations are not allowed to take pictures of individuals they encounter during practice, teaching, or counselling—even if the photos are not shared.

You cannot post or share information or photos related to your practice placement or activities connected to it. This applies to both private and public social media, as well as other forms of communication that could lead to a breach of confidentiality.
