Master's thesis

A master's thesis and a master's project are the result of your own efforts within a topic you have chosen to immerse yourself in over time. While working on your master's thesis, you will learn theories and research methods in the field. You will develop analytical and critical skills, and you will learn to be your own project manager.

What is a master's thesis?

The master's thesis is the last task you will complete in a master's programme. Each master's programme has its own academic requirements and recommendations for the master's thesis. One factor that all master’s programmes have in common is that you will be a researcher and gain specialist expertise in the topic and method of your choice.

Supervision during work

Many students find the process of writing/creating their master's thesis/project to be especially fun, since they get to be very independent. However, it is not the case that you will be alone during the whole process. You will be appointed a supervisor that will help you.

Presentation and oral adjustment exam

In some master's programmes, the master's project must be presented, and in others you have an oral exam. Here, too, the academic requirements come into play. You can find what applies to your master's thesis in the course description.

Formal requirements, academic requirements, cheating and academic integrity

At the exam, you must show what you know and what you have learned in the course. In the course description, you will find a description of what you will have learned in the course.

At UiB, there may be special requirements for each exam, and these may differ from what you are used to from secondary school, studies in other subjects, and at other universities or colleges. Therefore, you must familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the particular exam that you are going to take.

General requirements are that you must have solved the assignment yourself, and you must always cite sources if you are inspired by or use the work of others. Familiarize yourself with the rules for cheating and citation before you take the exam.

Your exam answer must also meet the requirements specified in the exam paper, and any other requirements stated in the course description or on the course page in Mitt UiB.
