The Rosarium
The Rosarium in the Arboretum at Milde is Norway's largest rose collection and one of the largest in the Nordic region. Here you can see the variation, diversity and history of roses across three parts – the Wild Rose Slope, the Historic Slope and the Rose Garden.
What can you see here?
The Rosarium is divided into three parts, each telling its part of the story of roses:
- The Wild Rose Slope – the wild roses, the origin of roses
- The Rose Garden (modern roses) – newer, cultivated roses
- The Historic Slope – older and historic roses
Norway's largest rose collection
The rose collection in the Rosarium is not only Norway's largest, but also one of the largest in the Nordic region. The collection shows the variation, diversity and history of roses, so you can follow the kinship and development between the different roses in one place.
Some of the roses don't thrive here, but are still included because they mark milestones in the history of roses or show characteristics that are important for understanding how roses are related. Some roses must be grown in pots and brought indoors over winter. Some cannot tolerate frost, while others fall ill with leaf fungus during long rainy periods. In this way, the collection preserves rare roses that would not otherwise survive in the climate of Western Norway.
