Research profile

The University of Bergen is a strong, international research university with outstanding research and education in the full breadth of academic subjects. Independent and long-term research is the driving force for all activity at UiB, and is the basis for education, dissemination and innovation. Our researchers participate in international collaborations and in national and international research programmes. We have strong ties to universities around the world.

The university plays an important national and regional role as a custodian of knowledge and research infrastructure.

Our research policy

The most important prerequisite for scientific quality at UiB is investment in basic research and stable academic communities across a wide breadth of disciplines, all of a high international standard. Research and education lay the foundation for community, integration, social mobility, equality and trust in society.

Academic democracy is strong at UiB, with an elected rector, academic autonomy, strong academic communities and an organisational culture where consultation processes and committee work play an important role in the development of the institution.

The administration of everything from national history and cultural symbols to social statistics and legislation is carried out with scholarly rigour, grounded in research and free from external interference.

A great effort is made to recruit and retain skilled scientific staff, developing strong research leadership and improving gender balance. At the same time, the university prioritises providing sufficient research time, good working conditions and adequate resources to create the best possible foundation for high academic quality.

UiB is committed to fostering strong academic disciplines across a broad range of fields, extensive publication in reputable journals, competitive success in national and international research programmes that prioritise high academic quality, international collaboration in research and education, and doctoral education of high international quality.

Innovation

UiB has strengthened its ambitions in innovation through the establishment of the research company NORCE, the development of knowledge clusters, and investment in incubators and student innovation.
