What does a typical workday look like?
As a PhD candidate, you will work alongside committed research colleagues. You will usually be able to manage your work schedule independently when you are not engaged in training, teaching, attending conferences or working toward time-critical project deadlines.
During your PhD you will develop your analytical skills, undertake teaching duties and work alongside other researchers to address important research questions that will impact society.
You will be able to travel abroad for research stays, and to attend national and international conferences where you meet passionate researchers within your own field.
At UiB you will work in an egalitarian structure where you will be given responsibility and shown confidence from the head of research.

To succeed as a PhD candidate at UiB, you’ll need to be structured and take initiative. You’ll understand the value of teamwork. It is an asset if you enjoy teaching and dissemination. In return, PhD education offers a variety of professional opportunities.
Your rights as an employee
As a PhD research fellow at UiB, you will receive a salary and enjoy the rights of a temporary employee. If you become a parent or become ill, you have the right to paid leave. In this case, the end-date of your PhD will be extended.
How to apply for admission to the PhD programme?
Admission requires that you have completed a Master’s education, normally of at least five years. Full funding is required in addition to a PhD project description. The remaining requirements differ between faculties, academic fields and the specific PhD research fellow vacancy. PhD education is usually funded in one of two ways. You can apply for a PhD research fellowship at UiB. These are announced at:
If you have obtained a PhD position at UiB, some faculties will admit you to the PhD programme in the same process. At other faculties, recruitment and admission to the PhD programme is separated. Your host faculty can inform you of the appropriate arrangement.
A second way to obtain funding is via a research fellowship paid for by a public or private institution or company outside of UiB. If you have funding and/or an employer external to UiB, you should always apply for admission to the PhD programme separately. If this applies to you, please contact the relevant faculty.
