Six out of ten women want more information about menopause. This is the finding of a new Norwegian study where Marianne Natvik is the first author.

Menopause is still surrounded by myths and rarely discussed—even among healthcare professionals. Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, most commonly at 52–53 years. Most women will experience one or more symptoms of menopause, and one in three will be severely affected.

There are many options for help. The most important self-care measures are maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in regular physical activity. Strength training is particularly important after menopause to preserve muscle and skeletal mass. Some women require medication, either hormone therapy or non-hormonal drugs. This must be assessed individually by a general practitioner or gynecologist.
