Bergen Bathysphere Symposium 2025
The third annual Bergen Bathysphere Symposium was held during week 45 at the Espegrend Marine Research Field Station, drawing together the local community of deep-sea scientists and professionals. Over several days, participants engaged in workshops, hands-on sessions, and collaborative discussions — all centered on deep-sea science, exploration and communication.

This year’s symposium once again highlighted the growing interest in understanding and protecting the deep ocean, one of Earth’s least explored frontiers. The event fostered lively exchanges between early-career researchers and experienced scientists, offering a unique platform for sharing ideas, building networks and developing new approaches to public engagement with ocean science.
CDeepSea was well represented at the event, with a dedicated team including Hassan Arsin, Petra Hribovšek, Renée Hageman and Morgane Le Saout, who played key roles in organizing and facilitating the symposium. Special recognition goes to Christian Nilsson, Maja Lian Jæger, Mari Heggernes Eilertsen, David Rees, Morgane and Petra for leading inspiring workshops and discussions throughout the week, including a group discussion on how to better engage the public in caring about the deep sea and its ecosystems.
The Bergen Bathysphere Symposium continues to serve as an important meeting point for curiosity-driven collaboration across disciplines — from biology and technology to science communication and policy.
