On 1 September, Professor Rolf Birger Pedersen from the University of Bergen’s Centre for Deep Sea Research led a guided tour of the deep-sea exhibit at the University Museum. The event was part of the celebrations marking the upcoming arrival of a new autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), scheduled for delivery in spring 2026 from Kongsberg.

For more than 25 years, Professor Pedersen has been at the forefront of developing and deploying advanced underwater technologies as part of the university’s deep-sea research. With support from the Ministry of Energy through the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, the Centre for Deep Sea Research will soon have access to the latest generation of the HUGIN Superior AUV. Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors, cameras and mapping tools, this vehicle can dive to depths of 6,000 metres while delivering the highest-quality data and navigation precision currently available.

The new AUV will operate alongside ÆGIR6000, enabling researchers to conduct simultaneous missions and significantly expanding the Centre’s capacity for data collection and discovery. Together, these technologies will strengthen ongoing efforts to explore the Arctic deep sea and open new opportunities for scientific breakthroughs.

At the event, University of Bergen Rector Margareth Hagen emphasised the institution’s long-standing leadership in deep-sea research. Further details about the event (in Norwegian) can be found on the Faculty of Science and Technology’s website.
