About the research centre

The Centre is hosted by Haukeland University Hospital in partnership with the University of Bergen and Haraldsplass Deaconess Hospital in Bergen, Norway. Neuro-SysMed is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the host and partner institutions.

The Neuro-SysMed activities are organised into five disease-focused nodes:

  • Multiple sclerosis, led by Professor Kjell-Morten Myhr
  • Parkinson's disease, led by Professor Charalampos Tzoulis
  • Dementia, led by Dr. Kristoffer Haugarvoll
  • ALS, led by Professor Ole-Bjørn Tysnes
  • Care, led by Professor Bettina Husebø

In addition, we are running cutting-edge translational research organised into:

  • the Drug Discovery Node, led by Professors Aurora Martinez and Jannicke Igland, coordinating drug discovery activities for novel and repurposed compounds
  • the Systems Biology & Bioinformatics Node, led by Dr Gonzalo Sanchez Nido and Dr. Dimitrios Klefogiannis, coordinating data integration, multimodal analyses and bioinformatics – an essential part of our systems medicine activity
  • the Responsible Research and Innovation & Patient and Public Involvement (RRI/ PPI) Node, led by Professor Jan Reinert Karlsen and Dr. Caroline Engen, coordinating RRI/PPI and philosophy of neurodegeneration.

Main web pages

Note that Neuro-SysMed's main web pages are on the Helse Bergen platform. There you can find info on all our groups and people, our clinical studies, our organisation and facilities, publications, media list, newsletters and annual reports, as well as info on patient and user participation in our research projects.

Here on the UiB platform, you can find information about our Research School and our events.

The Neuro-SysMed Seminar Series

We have a monthly seminar series with research updates in our fields, and sometimes extra seminars by especially interesting visitors. The seminars are open to researchers, postdocs, PhD candidates, Master students, students enrolled in the Medical Student Research Program, patient representatives, and others interested in the topics presented.

Check out the events postings on the bottom of this page for the coming seminars, or find a complete overview of our seminars here.

Neuro-SysMed's Annual Symposium at Solstrand

Make sure not to miss our main event of the year: our annual 2-day symposium at Solstrand! This year, it takes place on November 18 and 19 with lots of exciting research updates on MS, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and dementia. Speakers will come from our own ranks as well as international collaborators, and we guarantee great networking opportunities, enjoyable social gatherings and rewarding discussions with colleagues!

The Neuro-SysMed Junior Scientist Symposia

The Neuro-SysMed Junior Scientist Symposia are organized four times annually, and although they are mainly intended for Neuro-SysMed's young researchers, i.e. the PhD candidates, postdocs, Master students and others, they are open to all who are interested in the talks, also outside of the Neuro-SysMed groups. The talks will be on current topics and research within dementia, MS, ALS and Parkinson's.

Check out the events postings on the bottom of this page for the coming symposia, or find a complete overview of our Junior Scientist Symposia here.

The Neuro-SysMed Research School in Translational Neuroscience

The Neuro-SysMed Research School in Translational Neuroscience has established a broad range of PhD courses. All research nodes from our various fields are responsible for organising these courses, promoting high-quality education for PhD candidates and other students, and aiming to build a strong foundation for their research.
