Prof. Ane Johannessen gave the oral presentation “Shaping the global exposome landscape from an epidemiological point of view” at the ERS Congress 2025 in Amsterdam. In the talk, she introduced the concept of the exposome, which encompasses all exposures we experience throughout the lifespan. She reviewed what is currently known and where the knowledge gaps remain, and pointed to future directions. As part of this, she highlighted the development of an epi-exposome toolbox and presented the ERS Clinical Research Collaboration EXPLAIN-IT (external link) (Exposome and Prevention of Lung Diseases, An International Interdisciplinary Translational Network), where she is one of the project chairs.
Johannessen also chaired two symposia. The first, “Natural and man-made disasters: a new global norm?”, focused on the respiratory health impacts of disasters and the importance of coordinated healthcare responses. The second, “A global perspective on occupational lung disease: moving from diagnosis to action,” highlighted the global burden of occupational lung diseases and discussed possible interventions, with particular attention to low- and middle-income countries.
