Responding to GenAI in Higher Music Education: Implications for Other Fields
I hope you will be able to join us for another excellent TeLEd Event. This one will feature David Hebert, Professor of Music Education at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL). A widely published researcher, his most recent publications related to this topic appear in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, the Oxford Handbook of Artificial Intelligence in Music Education (in press), and his latest book A New Philosophy of Music Education for the Era of AI (Routledge, 2026). And while this talk is about experiences in the field of music education, its lessons are applicable to teaching in any discipline.
In this presentation, Prof. Hebert will describe how the field of music in higher education is responding to new challenges and opportunities arising from the rapid popularization of generative artificial intelligence. New opportunities are notable when it comes to student inclusion and innovative research methods, while challenges are especially felt in such areas as assessment of creativity, intellectual property, sustainability of heritage, and preservation of personal identity. Several key principles, debates, research findings, and anecdotes will be shared, followed by transdisciplinary discussion.
