NESS (external link)offers a meeting place for researchers within the social sciences and humanities working on environmental issues in the Nordic countries and beyond. The conference is distinguished by its workshop-based format, where participants engage in in-depth discussions of fully drafted manuscripts.

Janne took part in the workshop “Social inclusion in the green transition: How are citizens addressed and involved in transport and community planning?” Together with six fellow researchers, she presented and discussed her ongoing work examining the impacts of proposed large-scale infrastructure planning projects on diverse values of nature in the Nordhordland UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Reflecting on the experience, Janne highlighted the value of the conference’s interactive format. The workshop setting provided a unique opportunity to connect closely and engage in meaningful conversations with fellow researchers working on environmental issues. The conference proved to be an inspiring platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration – and will be continued with the 18th edition of the NESS conference, to be hosted by Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Finland, in 2028.

Thanks to Klima og energiomstilling ved UiB for the financial support that enabled Janne’s participation in the NESS conference 2026.
