Geological collections
The geological collections include rocks, minerals and fossils collected over the past hundred years. The collections were formalized in 1888 and are an important research infrastructure for geology in Western Norway.

The geological collections contain samples of rocks, minerals and fossils, as well as field diaries and other documentation of the collecting activities by researchers, students and private individuals over more than a hundred years. The collection was formalized in 1888.
The material is a resource for research and teaching in geology, with a regional focus on Western Norway.
What do the collections contain?
Minerals
The extensive mineral collection consists of c. 10 000 minerals from Western Norway, Norway in general, and from all over the world. Minerals from Langesundsfjorden (southeast Norway) are especially well represented. Representative and valuable parts of this collection are displayed in the museum.
Fossils
The collection contain fossils, mainly from Norway.

Material from Quaternary geology and marine geology.
The regional collection
Rock and geological material from the region.

Collection of building stone.
