About the research project

The Center combines fundamental research with technology development, and governs Norwegian research and development activities at CERN, which are grouped around the ATLAS and ALICE experiments and research collaborations. These particle detectors are large scientific apparatuses of several thousand tons that record data from proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), 100 meters underground. With Run 3 of the LHC ending in 2026, research groups are now fully engaged in detector and computing upgrades for the high-luminosity phase of the LHC that is expected to start in 2030. During Runs 4 and 5, the detectors will have to cope with extreme levels of pile-up, up to 200 simultaneous collisions per proton bunch crossing, compared to 64 in Run 3.
