Advanced Climate Dynamics Courses
Advanced Climate Dynamics Courses (ACDC) is an annual series of climate science summer schools organized by the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research at the University of Bergen in collaboration with international partner institutions.
About the research school
Concept
Each year ACDC summer school feature a different thematic focus within climate dynamics. During two weeks, 25 students from Norway and abroad, as well as internationally renowned lecturers, gather to lecture and discuss topics related to geology, weather and climate. Past topics have included "The Dynamics of the Seasonal Cycle," "Memory in the Climate System," and "Landscapes and Climate."
This school first ran in 2009 and has been ongoing since, except for 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19.
Programs have taken place in locations including Norway's Rondane National Park, Snøheim at the foot of Snøhetta, and Sweden's Abisko Scientific Research Station. Students gain experience in activities such as tree-coring, advanced bi-spectral statistical methods and analyzing climate model simulations.
Funding and practical support
ACDC has been sported by a range of sources over the many years it has exited. Key sponsors include by the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Higher Education (SIU), the Norwegian Research School on Changing Climates in the coupled Earth System (CHESS), the IBS Center for Climate Physics, the Greenland Ice Sheet Ocean (GRISO) science network, the Norwegian Agency for International Cooperation and Quality Enhancement in Higher Education (Diku), the Norwegian Research School in Climate Dynamics (ResClim), the Research Council of Norway, the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, the University of Bergen, the University of Washington, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Comer Foundation.
There is a registration fee, with accommodation, full board, and field excursions covered for participants.
ACDC summer schools are organized by the Department of Earth Sciences and Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research at the University of Bergen in collaboration with institutions including the University of Washington, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Partners have included Harvard University, McGill University, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and IBS Centre for Climate Physics.
