International PhD students with external financing

On this page you will find information for international PhD candidates with external financing.

International PhD candidates and researchers with their own funds that have been granted a residence permit according to the the Immigration Act section 26 (Immigration Regulations section 6-20) (external link) can register and be given student status at the University of Bergen.

Required documentation

The following documentation must be sent to: studentconfirmation@uib.no

  • Letter of approval of residence permit from UDI
  • Admission or invitation letter to the University of Bergen
  • Documentation of financing
Semester fee and registration

All students at the University of Bergen must complete their semester registration at the Studentweb and pay the semester fee every semester.

The semester fee invoice will not be automatically generated for PhD. students. You must therefore send an e-mail to studentconfirmation@uib.no to obtain it.

Please note that the type of financing that funds your stay in Norway will determine what type of residence permit you are eligible for as a PhD. researcher.

*Researchers that will work as full-time employees and remunerated by a Norwegian institution or company, will be granted a residence permit that entitles them to work in Norway according to the Immigration Act section 23, cf. the Immigration Regulations section 6-1.

*PhD. researchers in this category will not be entitled to student status and benefits.

Housing

PhD. candidates do not have housing guarantee unless they are admitted to UiB for at least one semester with financing from NORPART, NORHED or similar programs financed from Norway. You will then be eligible for housing guarantee, but only if you are a  first-time applicant to Sammen housing.

Conditions to be eligible for housing guarantee:

  • Residing abroad at the time of admission.
  • Submit the application for student accommodation within the deadline.
  • Arriving at the beginning of the semester (rent must be paid from 1 August/1 January).

Please note that a housing guarantee ensures a room or space in a student building; however, a specific room type is not guaranteed.

Family and couple apartments are not included in the housing guarantee.

Health insurance

All international students must have valid health insurance while in Norway. The University of Bergen does not provide liability insurance for students.
