Objectives

The course provides increased knowledge of Latin vocabulary, inflection, and syntax, and an overview of Roman literary and cultural history.

Content

Reading of central prose texts from antiquity. There are lectures on syntax, inflection, and the historical background of the text.

  • identify forms and analyse sentences in Latin using a grammar

  • make sense of the grammatical structure of a new language
  • work with texts in other languages ​​using grammars, dictionaries, text commentaries, and similar support material.

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching is given in the form of lectures on parts of the course literature and exercises in practical language mastering, for instance by translation from Norwegian to Latin

About 42 hours of teaching, three times a week in the second half of the semester.

If less than five students register to a course, the Department may introduce reduced teaching; cf. the relevant guidelines on Mitt UiB (Canvas). On courses where reduced teaching may be given, the students will receive information at the start of the semester, before the 1. Feb. / 1. Sept. deadline for registering.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
None.
Forms of Assessment

6 hour written exam, on campus.

The exam assignment will be given in the language of instruction in the course.

The exam can be submitted in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade, grade F is a fail.
Assessment Semester
Spring. There is also assessment early in the following semester.
Reading List
The syllabus is approximately 80 pages of Latin text (30 lines = 1 page). At least 50 of these are read in commented editions. In addition, a handbook of Latin grammar and an overview of Roman literary history are included.
Course Evaluation
Students evaluate the course in accordance with the quality assurance system at UiB and the Department.
Examination Support Material
A dictionary from Latin to native language or to other language of choice, which does not contain declination and conjugation tables: Johanssen, Nygaard etc., Latinsk ordbok, Cassell’s Latin Dictionary, or a dictionary of similar size.
