Objectives and Content

Objectives

Graduates should have acquired solid, scientifically-based knowledge and competence in mathematical subjects, within one of the following areas: mathematics, applied and computational mathematics, statistics and data science, or actuarial science and data analysis. They should have received a good introduction to scientific working methods and training in independent work with extensive and demanding academic tasks. They will have developed specialized expertise in one subject area as well as a good overview of other subject areas.

Content

The project tasks offered are usually designed in a dialogue between the supervisor and the student and then approved by the program board regarding the design and scope of the task (i.e., the task should be able to be completed within the standard time).

Required Previous Knowledge
To enroll in the course, you must have must be admitted to a master’s program at the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science and Technology and you must meet any admission requirements.
Access to the Course
To start the course, you must have a study right associated with a master’s program at the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science and Technology, and you must meet any admission requirements.
Forms of Assessment

In the course, the following assessment methods are used:

After the master’s thesis is submitted and approved, the study concludes with an oral master’s examination. This examination consists of a public presentation of about 30 minutes where the student provides an overview of the thesis. The examination committee and the supervisor are present at the public presentation. This is followed by an oral examination/conversation with the examination committee and the supervisor about the thesis.

Before the presentation, a grade will be assigned to the thesis. The presentation, along with the subsequent oral examination/conversation, can adjust the final grade of the thesis. It is the final grade that is communicated to the candidate and appears on the transcript.

Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
Assessment Semester
Exams are held every semester. The exam is conducted after the master's thesis is submitted and all courses are passed.

The Programme committee is responsible for the content, structure and quality of the study programme and courses.
