Course description
Objectives and Content
In Oral and maxillofacial radiology the students will learn how X-rays are generated, their effects and how X-rays are used for imaging teeth and supportive tissues, jaws and other facial structures, and learn how to interpret the radiographic images.
OD2RØNT is a skills course that provides the basis for the clinical patient training course (OD3RØNT). OD3RØNT builds on OD2RØNT. Finished OD2RØNT is a prerequisite to be able to follow OD3RØNT.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge
The student shall be able to explain
- The origin and properties of x-rays and how x-rays are used to image teeth, the supporting tissues of the teeth and the surrounding jaws and facial structures.
- The biological effects of x-rays and radiobiological protection in clinical dental practice, i.e justification assessment and approach to optimization of intraoral and extraoral images.
- The theoretical and practical approach to projection technique in intraoral image examination.
- Normal anatomical structures in intraoral radiographs.
Skills
The students shall be able to
- In practice conduct intraoral image acquisition.
- Examine, interpret and name normal anatomical structures on intraoral radiographs.
General competence
The student should develop clinical understanding for the importance of good working routines and create a basis for the ability to communicate with patients and colleagues.

Teaching and learning methods
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Clinical seminars and the radiology skills course is mandatory. In the 4th semester, the students must successfully complete a radiological anatomy test to proceed to OD3RØNT.
All teaching is mandatory, except for lectures. The student is responsible for reporting absences, and unexcused absences are not allowed. In addition to the attendance requirements, the academic requirements must be met, both in terms of the quality of the work and sufficient practice.
In this subject, mandatory activities are valid for two semesters.
It is not permitted to have more than two attempts at mandatory teaching in this subject.
Forms of Assessment
Practical skills are assessed continuously throughout the course. Before the student can take the course test (30 minute written test), a clinical teacher must approve that the student is capable of acquiring all the radiographs of a full-mouth series. The final test in radiological anatomy is assessed by an internal examiner.
When the assessment method in a subject is a written test", two continuous tests will be arranged shortly for students without valid results. Students who have not achieved valid results after three attempts will be moved to lower classes. The three attempts that belong to each implementation of the subject are counted as one assessment attempt in accordance with UiB's regulations on studies §8-1 (1). Due to the short time between the regular and new test, complaints about grading will not be processed until the third attempt has been completed. If the third attempt is conducted as an oral test, the two previous written attempts will be the subject of the complaint process.
