Course description
Objectives and Content
Objectives:
In this course, it is emphasized that the student can integrate knowledge and skills from all subjects that have been reviewed in the previous semesters until the end of the 4th year of study. Based on previously acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes, the student can examine and treat the most common conditions in the oral cavity.
Content:
A prerequisite for taking the OSCE exam (objective structured clinical exam), is that all clinical courses in 7th and 8th semester have been approved.
Since this course is based on elements that have been introduced earlier in the course and study program, reference is made both a) to the overall theoretical and practical/clinical learning goals for the dental education and b) to the individual courses.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, the student has the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills, and general qualifications:
Knowledge:
The student:
- has knowledge about symptoms, clinical findings, investigation and treatment within the most common oral problems.
- has knowledge of relevant additional examinations, for example CT, MRI and laboratory examinations
- has knowledge of general pathology.
- has knowledge about main groups of pharmaceuticals and their effects.
- has knowledge about adverse effects of medication and treatments and how it can affect the oral cavity.
- has knowledge of clinical use, biological aspects and handling of dental biomaterials.
- has knowledge of microbiology in relation to dental and oral health.
- is familiar with regulations through The Social Security System regarding reimbursement of expenses for dental treatment.
- has knowledge of The Act on Dental Health Services ("Lov om tannhelsetjenesten").
Skills:
The student:
- records independently a medical history and a good, structured patient journal
- performs simple diagnostic examinations
- assesses the need for radiological examinations and carries out regular x-rays
- assesses the need for additional examinations
- carries out basic prophylactic and therapeutic measures independently for the patient.
- carries out basic emergency treatment and handles emergency situations that may arise in connection with dental treatment.
- applies the most common modern, scientifically approved prophylactic and therapeutic agents, materials, and techniques.
- evaluates completed treatment and makes a prognosis assessment.
- assesses the need for follow-up appointments and plan the maintenance phase
General qualifications:
The student:
- is able to collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
- acts ethically and professionally towards patients, next of kin and towards colleagues.
- recognizes own professional limitations and refers the patient when special expertise or a doctor/hospital is needed.
- acts in accordance with laws, procedures and ethical guidelines.

Teaching and learning methods
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Clinical courses within oral and maxillofacial radiologi, orthodontics, cariology, periodontics, endodontics, prosthetics and oral surgery and medicine, including seminars and case presentations. All these courses are mandatory and have to be approved before the student can take the final evaluation.These courses make up a whole and will assess the student's knowledge, skills and general qualifications within each field of dentistry.
All teaching is mandatory, except for lectures. The student is responsible for reporting absences, and unexcused absences are not allowed. In addition to the attendance requirements, the academic requirements must be met, both in terms of the quality of the work and sufficient practice.
In this subject, mandatory activities are valid for two semesters.
It is not permitted to have more than two attempts at mandatory teaching in this subject.
