International course

Objectives:

The objectives of this course are to increase the students' knowledge, competence and skills in the field of oral health in a global perspective and simultaneously stimulate the students' reflections regarding diversities in oral health practices compared to the situation in Norway. Overall, the course conveys an understanding for global challenges in oral health specifically and in health in general, and for excisiting dental health and health services.

Content:

The course touches topics within epidemiology, community dentistry, health promotion and disease prevention, oral pathology, clinical practice and global challenges in provision and use of oral health care services.

Upon completion of the course, the student has the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

The student:

• has advanced knowledge regarding oral health challenges globally, the interaction between oral health and general health, individual and societal factors affecting oral health globally
• knows how to apply oral health prevention and oral health promotion in low resource settings.
• knows of the global burden of oral diseases.
• knows different methods to assess information regarding collected data about oral health and health in general.

Skills:

The student:

• makes a situation analysis with problem identification and aims regarding the oral health situation in low resource settings.
• implements an oral health program based on this situation analysis and knows how to use relevant methods for oral health research and use of oral health preventive strategies.

General competence:

The student reflects, communicates and contributes towards global challenges in oral health. Ethical conditions, various approaches to intervention, international cooperation and public versus private healthcare services are topics the student is capable of making a decision on.
