Course description
Objectives and Content
Objectives:
In this course, emphasis is placed on the student being able to integrate knowledge and skills from all courses that have been reviewed during all the previous semesters. Based on previously acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes, the student can examine and treat the most common, and some of the more complex, conditions in the oral cavity. The student must see the various disciplines and subjects in the patient's context and be able to prioritize and propose a treatment sequence based on the patient's needs. The student's ability to be responsible for the patient's oral health and hence follow him/her up in a professional and reflective manner, will be given great importance.
Content:
As the course is based on elements that have been introduced earlier in the curriculum, reference is made both to the overall theoretical and practical/clinical learning objectives, and to the learning outcomes at the various clinical disciplines. The training will be a continuation of the initial clinical training that has been completed and passed up to and including the 9th semester.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, the student has the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge:
The student:
- has in-depth knowledge of symptoms, clinical findings, treatment planning and treatment of the most common oral health issues.
- has knowledge of supplemental examinations, for example CT, MRI and laboratory tests.
- has knowledge of how illness in the body can affect oral health.
- has knowledge of the main groups of drugs and their mechanisms of action and how these can affect oral disease and the choice of therapy.
- has knowledge of the special needs of elderly and hospitalized patients.
- has knowledge of clinical use, biological aspects and handling of dental biomaterials.
- has knowledge of the microbiology that is of importance for dental and oral health.
- is familiar with dental treatment at The Public Dental Health Service and more advanced treatment with The Specialist Dental Health Service.
- is familiar with social security regulations for reimbursement of expenses for dental treatment.
- has knowledge about the Norwegian Dental Health Service Act.
Skills:
The student:
- records anamnesis independently and writes good and structured patient records for all patient groups.
- performs simple diagnostic examinations expected of an authorized dentist.
- assesses the need for, and takes, intraoral radiographs.
- considers the need for additional examinations.
- carries out basic prophylactic and therapeutic measures for the patient in an independent manner.
- masters various forms of emergency treatment, handles acute situations that may occur during dental treatment and assesses the need for further referral/hospitalization.
- uses the most common modern, scientifically accepted prophylactic and therapeutic measures, materials and techniques.
- evaluates the completed treatment and provides an objective, prognostic assessment.
- assesses the need for follow-up after completed treatment and plans the maintenance phase.
- ensures whether the patient is entitled reimbursement/benefits for dental treatment from social security.
- presents and defends treatment performed on patients treated in the Student Clinic.f
General competence:
The student:
- collaborates with dental hygienists, dental nurses and other health personnel.
- demonstrates ethical and professional behavior towards patients, parents, next of kin and colleagues.
- acknowledges his/her own professional limitations and refers the patient when necessary.
- act in accordance with legislation, procedures and ethical guidelines.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
The clinical training in the course is mandatory.
The student is responsible for reporting absences.
The training consists of all clinical instructions within the following clinical disciplines: cariology, endodontics, gerodontology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral surgery and oral medicine, pedodontics, periodontology and prosthodontics. Observation and participation at the Maxillofacial Surgery Department at the Haukeland University hospital and also at the Bergen Acute Dental care-unit, is included as parts of the training.
The student must have an holistic approach to the various clinical disciplines, prioritises and suggests a sequence of treatments according to the patients' needs and where an interdisciplinary approach is necessary. The training in all the clinical disciplines and case presentations must be approved before the final evaluation of the student in the course, both in terms of quality of work and sufficient amount of training. The various trainings constitutes a whole and must reflect the knowledge, skills and general competence the student has aquired during the study, both from the pre-, para- and clinical courses.
