About The Norwegian Language Courses

The University of Bergen offers Norwegian language courses at all levels, from beginner to advanced, to a wide range of target groups.

Events and Activities at the Norwegian Language Courses

The Norwegian language courses regularly organize a variety of activities and events for both their own students and other interested participants.

Language Café

The Norwegian Language Courses host a language café at Ad Fontes once a month, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The language café is open to students in Levels 1, 1+2, 2, 3 and 4, and attendance is on a drop-in basis.

The language café is a friendly meeting place where you can practise Norwegian in a relaxed and informal setting. We play board games, chat, and get to know each other better. You are welcome to join whenever it suits you and stay for as long as you like. Waffles, coffee and tea will be served.

What is The Norwegian Language Courses?

The Norwegian Language Courses at the University of Bergen offer courses at four different levels to international students enrolled at UiB, international employees, partners of international employees, refugees and immigrants with residence permits, as well as employees in the higher education sector outside UiB. We offer more than 600 study places each semester, distributed across nine different courses.

Exceptions for Norwegian language course students

Students enrolled in Norwegian language courses can find general information on UiB’s student webpages. However, there are certain exceptions and special arrangements that apply either to all Norwegian language course students or to specific applicant groups.

Exceptions to the General Information

  • Reading lists for Norwegian language courses are not published on uib.no. Information about required reading and other course materials is available in Mitt UiB for students admitted to a Norwegian language course.
  • UiB employees and partners of UiB employees admitted to Norwegian language courses through Søknadsweb follow separate procedures. They should not register for classes or examinations in Studentweb and are generally exempt from paying the semester fee.

Additional Information About Examinations

  1. Computers and equipment for exams. Read about the Inspera assessment system and what you need to prepare before your exam.
    • All students must have access to a computer that can run the Inspera assessment system. You should set the keyboard language on your computer to Norwegian. If you need help changing your keyboard settings, you can contact the IT Department.
    • NOR-U1, NOR-U1/2, NOR-U2 and NOR-U3 include a listening test as part of the examination. You must use wired headphones connected to your computer. Wireless headphones are not permitted. If you do not have wired headphones, you may borrow a pair in the examination venue. The borrowed headphones use a 3.5 mm audio jack (mini-jack), so you should check whether your computer has a compatible audio port or bring a suitable adapter.
    • Borrow a computer from UiB. If you do not have a computer, if your computer cannot run Inspera, or if you do not have the necessary audio connection, you may apply to borrow a computer for your on-campus examination (see the link above).
  2. Illness or other exceptional circumstances. If you are unable to attend your scheduled examination due to acute illness or other compelling reasons, please contact studynorwegian@uib.no as soon as possible to enquire about the possibility of a postponed examination.
  3. Re-sitting an examination. Previous Norwegian course participants who have valid approved compulsory coursework may register for a new examination by completing this form.
