How to apply for online studies

Here you will find information about how to apply for online studies, admission requirements and which documentation of prior education and work experience you must attach to your application.

How to apply?

You will find an application link on each coursepage, for those courses that are currently open for applications.

This link lead in most cases to our application portal EvuWeb, which demands that you have a Norwegian ID-number and are able to log in.

For online studies that are open for applicants not residing in Norway, and therefore do not have a Norwegian ID-number, the course page will instead contain a link to a manual registration form.

General admission requirements of prior education and/or professional experience are described below. These are also described on each course page. Note that some courses may also have special admission requirements in addition.

Please read these terms of admission thoroughly and ensure that you upload and attach the required documentation when submitting your application.

UiB will not be able to handle your application, if any required documentation is missing.

Admission requirements for courses on Bachelor's level

General admission criteria

Are you below the age of 25? You must upload and attach proof that you have completed upper secondary school with general university admissions certification.

Are you 25 years or above? As a main rule, you must have general university admissions certification. If you do not have this, you must have a combination of upper secondary school and work experience, at least 5 years in total. Normally, we do not require any documentation from applicants older than 25, unless it is stated otherwise on the course webpage.

Any additional admission requirements will be stated on the course page.

For courses with a study fee

If you apply for a course with a study fee, you must have a minimum of 2 years full-time work experience, regardless of your age or level of prior education. You are asked to confirm that you fulfil this requirement, when filling out your application. No further documentation is required, unless we request it through random sampling. If you are unable to document the required work experience upon request, you might be expelled from the course.

For courses with no study fee

The Norwegian higher education act requires that students from countries outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland pay the full tuition fee if they wish to be enrolled into a course, even if the course is offered for free for Norwegian applicants and EEA/Switzerland applicants. Since the course fees have not yet been calculated, we will not be able to accept applicants from outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

Admission requirements for courses on Master's level

General admission criteria
  • You must have obtained a bachelor's degree or equivalent (180 ECTS). Find specific requirements for your home country in our country list.
  • You must have a minimum of 2 years full-time professional work experience, from fields that are relevant to the course in question. Examples of relevant fields are described on the course page. If you have only part time work experience, this must be converted to be equivalent to full-time, e.g. a 50% position must have at least 4 years duration

If you do not fulfil both criteria described above, we might consider your application if you can attach documents proving that:

  • You have at least 2 years/120 ECTS from higher education studies/bachelor studies.
  • You have several years of work experience or other relevant experience from e.g. NGOs, internships, voluntary work etc, from fields that are relevant for the course in question.

NOTE: Some master's courses might require that your prior education is within specific fields, or require more than 2 years of relevant work experience, etc. Such specific criteria will be stated on the course page.

Required documentation
  1. Bachelor's degree certificate/diploma (all pages)
  2. Transcript of records including a description of the grading scale used
  3. CV
  4. Formal certificate of service or other confirmation from current or former employer(s) showing that you meet the requirement for a minimum of two years' full-time relevant professional experience. The certificate/verification from the employer must be dated and contain the following information: Start and possible end date, employment rate, job title and signature from the employer (e-signature is approved).
  5. Copy of your valid passport or photo ID. This is only necessary for non-Norwegian applicants without a Norwegian ID-number, who therefore are unable to identify themselves and apply through our application system. See general application information on the top of this page.

Application deadlines and further procedure

Application handling

For courses where first come, first served-principle apply, we will accept new applicants continuously, as long as there are available places. Upcoming dates for next application handling will be announced on the course webpage, until the final deadline.

For courses with specific priority criteria, there will be a fixed application deadline and all applications will be considered after this date.

You will receive an answer to your application as soon as possible, normally a few days after the given date for application handling or final application deadline described on the course page.

The outcome of your application will be sent by e-mail to the e-mail address you registered in your application.

If your application is accepted and you are offered a study place, you will have a deadline 7-14 days to either accept or decline the offered study place. Note that the deadline might be shorter than this, if your application is handled shortly before the course starts.

Ranking of applicants

We have a certain number of study places on each course. As a main rule, we accept qualified applicants by the first come, first served principle, meaning in the order the applications are registered. If the course is full, you will be put on the waiting list.

For some courses there are other specific priority criteria, for example that applicants with specific professional work experience or from specific branches or employers will be prioritized. Such criteria are described on the course page. If no such criteria are described, the first come, first served-principle apply.

Confirmation of submission

If you accept the offered study place, you will receive another e-mail confirming that you have been admitted as student. Note that you will only have access to the course in question, not to other courses or programmes at UiB.

Terms and conditions

Once your submission has been confirmed, you will need to accept the terms and conditions for part-time students at UiB.
