About the Photo Archive
The University Museum maintains an extensive cultural history photo archive covering its activities from the late 19th century to the present day.

Many photos are already searchable and can be downloaded free of charge under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence, provided the photographer and the University Museum of Bergen are credited. (Example: photo: photographer's name © University Museum of Bergen.)
Prices and delivery terms
The University Museum of Bergen works continuously to update and make its collections available online.
If the image is not available digitally, there is a good chance we still have it in the photo archive. If it does not already exist, you can order new photography of the object.
The price for professional photography of objects for publication is NOK 1,200 per photo, excluding 25% VAT.
A discount is given for publication in connection with research, museum activities, local history publications and other non-commercial use. The images are delivered as high-resolution, high-quality digital files.

Delivery time
From 1 September 2026 to 1 March 2027, the photo service is closed for orders due to the relocation of the photo archives and photo studio.
Delivery time is normally 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the size and scope of the order. For larger orders, delivery may take somewhat longer.

Photos – delivery terms
The photo archive normally has a delivery time of 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the size and scope of the order. Larger orders should be expected to take somewhat longer.
1. The following information must be provided when publishing photographs
a) The copyright to the photograph(s) belongs to the University Museum of Bergen. When publishing, credit as follows: the photographer's name and "© University Museum of Bergen/University of Bergen", together with the photographer's name.
b) If the photograph is cropped or only part of the image is used, this must be stated.
c) The type or character of the object must be stated. If only a detail of the object is depicted, this must be made clear.
d) The find location or geographic region must be stated where known.
2. Reuse and transfer
The photographs may not be transferred, sold or otherwise made available to third parties without written permission from the Museum of Cultural History.
3. Responsibility when using images
Users are responsible for exercising due care when using the photographs, so that people depicted are not offended or otherwise harmed, cf. Section 104 of the Copyright Act.
