Forskning
Eirik Keilegavlen studerte anvendt og beregningsorientert matematikk ved Universitetet i Bergen (UiB), hvor han disputerte for doktorgraden i 2010. Siden 2012 har han vært fast forsker i forskningsgruppen for Porøse medier ved Matematisk institutt ved UiB. I 2013–14 var han gjesteforsker ved Princeton University.
Keilegavlens forsker på matematisk modellering og numeriske metoder for koblede prosesser i undergrunnen, motivert av anvendelser som geotermisk energi og lagring av karbon i undergrunnen. Mye av arbeidet dreier seg om diskretiseringsmetoder og løsere for lineære og ikke-lineære problemer, med særlig vekt på simuleringer av porøse medier med sprekker. Han kombinerer dette matematiske fokuset med en interesse for å anvende avanserte simuleringsmetoder i andre fagområder, og deltar jevnlig i tverrfaglige prosjekter i samarbeid med geologer, seismologer og geokjemikere.
En sentral del av Keilegavlens arbeid er utvikling av åpen programvare for vitenskapelige beregninger. Han er grunnlegger og hovedansvarlig for utviklingen av det åpne simuleringsverktøyet PorePy, tilpasset koblede prosesser i sprukne porøse medier, og han har vært hovedutvikler siden. PorePy har vært mye brukt i forskning ved UiB og er også tatt i bruk av flere forskningsgrupper internasjonalt.
I tillegg til å lede PorePy-utviklergruppen har Keilegavlen lang erfaring som prosjektleder. Han er og en erfaren veileder, deriblant for totalt 16 doktorgradsstudenter – 5 av dem som hovedveileder – og 4 postdoktorer, hvorav to som hovedveileder. Gjennom sitt arbeid med PorePy er han sterkt engasjert i å gi studenter erfaring med utvikling av vitenskapelig programvare og bruk av verktøy med åpen kildekode.
