Jeg er historiker med spesialisering innen økonomi, miljø, teknologi og statssosialisme. Mine publikasjoner inkluderer artikler i ledende internasjonale tidsskrifter som Technology and Culture, Environment and History, Contemporary European History og Journal of Contemporary History, blant flere. Jeg har utforsket ulike aspekter av naturens og naturressursenes historie, inkludert vann og skog, teknologiske prosjekter og sosialistisk modernitet, samt industriarvens historie i det moderne Russland. Min første monografi, The Green Power of Socialism: Wood, Forest, and the Making of Soviet Industrially Embedded Ecology, utgitt av MIT Press i 2024, undersøker forholdet mellom natur og menneske under statssosialismen ved å analysere den industrielle rollen til de sovjetiske skogene.

Boken min utforsker de skiftende sovjetiske politikkene knyttet til forbruket av trevirke, og diskuterer hvordan fagpersoner i Sovjetunionens skogbrukssektor forestilte seg skogens nåtid og framtid – både som en naturressurs og som kilde til industrielle råmaterialer. Ved å undersøke materialiteten i sovjetisk industri gjennom skog og trevirke, viser dette arbeidet hvordan det, paradoksalt nok, vokste fram en industrielt forankret økologi som et biprodukt av det sovjetiske industrialiseringsprosjektet. Boken revurderer kritisk to forklaringsmodeller som har dominert historiografien om sovjetiske tilnærminger til natur de siste tiårene – økocid og miljøvern. Den går utover disse polariserte karakteristikkene for å vise at miljøhensyn under statssosialismen vokste fram fra det moderniserende statens industrielle prioriteringer, og dermed ga opphav til en industrielt integrert økologi.

Mitt nåværende bokprosjekt utforsker konseptet matmodernitet innenfor rammen av statssosialismen. Fra midten av 1950-tallet ble industriell matproduksjon en sentral prioritet i den sovjetiske økonomien. Økt produksjon av jordbruks- og industribaserte matvarer ble ansett som avgjørende for å heve levestandarden, noe den sovjetiske ledelsen identifiserte som et viktig steg på veien mot å oppnå kommunisme fra og med 1961. Samtidig, i løpet av 1950- og 1960-årene, vokste vitenskapens og teknologiens rolle i matproduksjonen betydelig, med løfter om forbedringer både i mengde og kvalitet på ernæring.
