Forskning
William Helland-Hansens ekspertise er knyttet til avsetninger og avsetningsbergarter (sedimentologi), spesielt klastiske avsetninger, f.eks. grus, sand og leire og de tilsvarende bergartene, konglomerat, sandstein, og leirskifer. Hvordan transporteres partiklene, hvordan avsettes de, hvordan bygger de opp lagrekker gjennom lange tidsrom og hvilke faktorer kontrollerer bergartenes oppbygning og geometri? Hvordan kan denne kunnskapen anvendes for tolkning av bergarter fra fjern geologisk fortid, og hvordan kan den anvendes for samtiden og fremtiden?
William Helland-Hansen ble ansatt ved Universitet i Bergen (UiB) i 1997 etter 12 år i oljeindustrien (Norsk Hydro, 1985-1997). 1998-2025 var han vært professor ved UiB, 2007-2023 professor II ved Universitetssenteret på Svalbard (UNIS) og fra 2025 professor emeritus ved UiB. Hans faglige interesser omfatter et vidt spekter innenfor klastisk sedimentologi. Forskningstemaer er sekvensstratigrafi, trajektorie-analyse, klinoform-dynamikk, "source-to-sink", grunmarin sedimentasjon, tid- og rom struktur av bassenginnfylling og kystendringer i det 21 århundret. Forskningen er bygget delvis på data fra norsk sokkel og Svalbard, men også teoretiske analyser fra kontorpulten. Han har deltatt i mange prosjekter, delvis som prosjektleder og han har vært hovedveilder for mer enn 50 master studenter og 10 PhD kandidater.
I tillegg til forskningen har han et sterkt engasjement for populærvitenskapelig formidling. Han var involvert i oppbygningen av vitensenteret VILVITE, de nye utstillingene på Naturhistorisk Museum, UiB, var hovedredaktør for bestselgeren Naturhistorisk Vegbok, Hordaland (2004), redaktør og prosjektleder for nettstedet grind.no (2013-2019) (nå https://kringom.no/nb) redaktør for praktverket Landskapet forteller om de 100 fineste geologiske lokalitetene i Norge (2024), og fra 2025 redaktør av det populærvitenskapelige tidsskriftet Naturen.

Formidling
- Initiativtaker, hovedredaktør og prosjektleder for "Naturhistorisk Vegbok, Hordaland" (2004). Boken er en popularisert presentasjon av kunnskap om berggrunnsgeologi, kvartærgeologi, zoologi, botanikk og meteorologi for (tidligere) Hordaland fylke. Boken er på 568 sider med 1750 illustrasjoner og har vært en lokal bestselger (20 000 solgte bøker).
