Forskning
Forskningen min er forankret i informasjonsvitenskap og ligger i skjæringspunktet mellom ansvarlig kunstig intelligens, anbefalingssystemer, beregningsbasert brukeratferd, atferdsdataanalyse og menneske-KI-interaksjon. Jeg studerer hvordan KI-systemer former menneskelige beslutninger, preferanser, tillit og atferd, og hvordan slike systemer kan utformes slik at de støtter informert, kritisk og samfunnsnyttig bruk.
Siden 2009 har jeg publisert mer enn 150 fagfellevurderte vitenskapelige artikler i ledende internasjonale tidsskrifter og konferanser, blant annet Nature Food, Nature Sustainability, Communications of the ACM, The Web Conference, ACM RecSys, ACM UMAP, AAAI ICWSM, ACM SIGIR, JASIST, IPM og UMUAI. Forskningen min har mottatt flere priser og utmerkelser, blant annet Best Paper Award Honorable Mention ved The Web Conference. Jeg har også bidratt til å sikre mer enn 650 millioner NOK i konkurranseutsatt forsknings- og innovasjonsfinansiering som prosjektleder og med-prosjektleder, inkludert SFI MediaFutures.
- Mål: Mitt langsiktige forskningsmål er å utvikle KI-systemer som er nyttige, pålitelige og samfunnsansvarlige. Jeg er særlig opptatt av å forstå, modellere og positivt påvirke menneskelig atferd gjennom KI og anbefalingssystemer, for eksempel ved å hjelpe mennesker med å få tilgang til pålitelig informasjon, ta sunnere matvalg eller engasjere seg i mer mangfoldige og viktige nyheter.
- Tilnærming: Arbeidet mitt kombinerer beregningsmodeller, storskala analyse av atferdsdata, forskning på anbefalingssystemer, brukerstudier, nettbaserte eksperimenter, living-lab-studier og tverrfaglig teori fra informatikk, medievitenskap, psykologi, helsevitenskap og samfunnsvitenskap. Jeg samarbeider tett med industri, offentlig sektor og akademiske partnere for å teste KI-systemer i realistiske omgivelser og omsette forskning til praksis.
- Anvendelse: Forskningen min har anvendelser innen medieteknologi, journalistikk, anbefalingssystemer, helsekommunikasjon, matsystemer, personalisering, KI-transparens og pålitelige digitale tjenester. Som grunnlegger og senterleder for SFI MediaFutures, grunnlegger og leder av DARS-gruppen, og leder for Norwegian Computational Behaviour & AI Lab, bygger jeg tverrfaglige forskningsmiljøer som utvikler ansvarlig KI-teknologi for reelle samfunns- og næringslivsutfordringer.
Formidling
Jeg formidler jevnlig forskning om ansvarlig KI, anbefalingssystemer, pålitelig medieteknologi og beregningsbasert brukeratferd til akademia, næringsliv, myndigheter og allmennheten. Jeg er ACM Senior Member og ACM Distinguished Speaker, og holder ofte inviterte foredrag, keynotes, gjesteforelesninger og rådgivningsinnlegg om hvordan KI-systemer påvirker tillit, beslutninger og samfunn.
Jeg har vært seniorprogramkomitémedlem, arrangør eller leder for ledende internasjonale konferanser og workshops, blant annet ACM RecSys, ACM SIGIR, ACM UMAP, The Web Conference, HealthRecSys og MMM. Jeg sitter også i redaksjonsråd for tidsskrifter som Online Social Networks and Media og AI and Ethics, og gir råd til forsknings-, innovasjons- og oppstartsmiljøer innen ansvarlig KI, medieteknologi, helse og mat.
Gjennom SFI MediaFutures, DARS og Norwegian Computational Behaviour & AI Lab arbeider jeg aktivt med å omsette forskning til offentlig debatt, politikkutforming, industrisamarbeid og praktiske løsninger for ansvarlig KI. Formidlings- og rådgivningsarbeidet mitt handler særlig om å hjelpe organisasjoner med å designe, evaluere og styre KI-systemer som mennesker kan forstå, stille spørsmål ved og ha tillit til.
Undervisning
Jeg har mer enn 15 års erfaring med universitetsundervisning i Østerrike og Norge, med undervisning og veiledning på bachelor-, master-, MBA- og ph.d.-nivå. Siden 2009 har jeg undervist mer enn 2000 studenter i over 35 emner innen informasjonssystemer, anbefalingssystemer, data science, web science, kunstig intelligens, forskningsmetode og digitale medier. Jeg har også veiledet mer enn 35 master- og ph.d.-kandidater.
Mitt nåværende utdanningsbidrag er særlig knyttet til ph.d.- og masterveiledning, forskningsmentoring, invitert undervisning, gjesteforelesninger, etter- og videreutdanning og offentlig formidling innen ansvarlig KI, anbefalingssystemer og beregningsbasert brukeratferd. Jeg er for tiden fritatt fra ordinær undervisning på grunn av min rolle som senterleder for SFI MediaFutures.

I contributed significantly to this proposal by setting up a detailed strategic research & financial plan with according industry partners for the newly created research area social computing – one out of four research areas at the center.
- 2014: Austrian Research Promotion Agency – 6 COMET funded industry projects. Amount: ~500,000EUR (1 year) PI I co-acquired 6 scientific industry projects supported with grants by the national science fund (FFG) in the area of Social Computing; one of the project partners is one of the largest media companies in central Europe; an other one is an young German company winning the European start-up competition prize in Amsterdam.

Amount: 50,000EUR (1 year) PI This proposal was written to conduct individual in-depth research on the problem of predictive modeling in big data with colleagues at NTNU in Norway. This research is supported by ERCIM - the European Research Consortium of Informatics and Mathematics – acceptance rate 19/186
- 2013: Austrian Research Promotion Agency – 3 COMET funded industry projects. Amount: ~250,000EUR (1 year) PI I co-acquired three industry projects supported with grants by the national science fund (FFG) in the area of Social Computing.

Amount: 5,000EUR (1 year) PI This grant proposal was written to conduct in-depth research on the problem of social recommender systems on multi-dimensional data. The research was conducted together with an Austrian start-up with the goal to develop a prototypical social recommender system approach for a virtual marketplace.
- 2012: Marshall Plan - Visiting Scholar Fellowship. Amount: 7,500USD (5 months) PI This proposal was written to conduct individual in-depth research on the topic of efficient information access in social systems.
