Forskning
I min empiriske forskning bruker jeg unike studiesteder som fungerer som naturlige eksperimentelle lokasjoner, så som (i) lange fjell gradienter med stor høydeforskjeller, (ii) fjellrike oseaniske øyer og (iii) isbreforland.
(i) Store fjell og deres gradienter i bioklima brukes til å belyse mekanismen som påvirker artsrikdommen. For eksempel har Himalaya-fjellkjeden et tropisk bioklima i lavlandet og isbreer på toppen som etterligner breddegrads soneringen fra ekvatorial tropisk til arktisk sone. Jeg bruker disse storskala temperaturgradientene som in-situ eksperimentelle da de er observasjonseksperimenter der dramatiske endringer i klimatiske egenskaper som skjer over relativt korte geografiske avstander.
(ii) Den eksperimentelle situasjonen er enda mer ideell på atskilte prøvesteder som isolerte oseaniske øyer med fjell, som Tenerife og La Palma i Kanariøyene.
(iii) Isbreforland dannet under den lille istiden (1300-1850) er et annet naturlig eksperiment der tiden siden eksponering for luft er direkte knyttet til avstanden fra breen. Her fokuserer studiene mine på primær suksesjon og jordsmonns utvikling for å belyse hva som driver endringen i vegetasjon og landskap etter at breen har trukket seg tilbake på grunn av klimaendringer.
Prosjekter: For tiden jobber jeg med et prosjekt i Nepal som har som mål å identifisere den mest effektive forbindelsen mellom eksisterende verneområder, gjennom annen effektiv områdebasert bevaringsforvaltning (OECM), for å bevare biologisk mangfold i forhold til klimaendring og i harmoni med det lokale arealbrukssystemet.
Et annet prosjekt er i et isbreforland (Nordfjord, Norge), hvor vi har som mål å belyse effekten av visse nitrogenfikserende planter og hvordan de påviker den generelle suksesjonen og jordsmonnsutviklingen – et fenomen kjent som ‘ fsilitering’. To masterstudenter er en del av dette prosjektet.
Andre potensielle masterstudentprosjekter kan belyse hvorfor de rødlistede og truede reinsdyrene fortsatt jaktes på av grunneiere. I motsetning til dette er gangstier og hytter for fjellturister stengt for å beskytte reinsdyrene. Og hvorfor holdes de ville rovdyrene utenfor nasjonalparkene?
