What you need to know about relocating your belongings to Bergen.
Household goods
Many employees choose to use an international moving company to transport their belongings. Services, delivery times, and prices can vary significantly, so it is advisable to compare several providers and request quotations. Companies with experience in moves to and from Norway can often provide useful guidance on logistics, documentation, and customs procedures. Before arranging a shipment, make sure you understand the Norwegian customs regulations that apply to household goods and personal belongings.
Pets
If you bring a dog, cat or ferret, the animal must be ID-marked with an ISO-compliant microchip, have a valid rabies vaccination and the required health certificates issued by an authorised veterinarian. The requirements vary depending on the country of origin. Check the latest entry requirements with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority well before you travel, and follow their Guide: Travelling with pets to Norway (Mattilsynet.no).
Cars and other vehicles
If you plan to bring a vehicle to Norway, be aware that import, registration, and tax requirements may apply. We recommend checking the relevant rules for foreign-registered vehicles in Norway (skatteetaten.no).
Relocation reimbursment
Employees in permanent positions can request reimbursement for relocation costs. Contact your local HR for requirements.
Arriving in Bergen
Getting to Bergen and UiB
From Bergen Airport (Flesland), you can travel to the city centre by light rail, airport bus or taxi (external link). Once you are in the city centre, most UiB campuses are located nearby and are easily accessible by public transport, bicycle, or on foot.
Paying for transport
Public transport tickets can be purchased through the Skyss app or from ticket machines. If you do not yet have mobile internet or a Norwegian phone number, you can use a debit or credit card to buy tickets at the station.
Phone and internet
Access to a phone and the internet can be useful when you first arrive in Norway. Prepaid SIM cards can be purchased from convenience stores, supermarkets, and mobile providers, allowing you to obtain a Norwegian phone number quickly. Free Wi-Fi is available at Bergen Airport, UiB campuses, and many public places while you arrange a mobile subscription or home internet connection.
