Course description

Objectives and Content

The course includes dental and oral anatomy and oral biology. Structure and funcion of each tooth in both sets of teeth will be described, and a short introduction of occlusion is included.

Oral biology and anatomy includes micro- and macroanatomical description of oral tissues, and their function. Tooth development and eruption, and the biology of the jaw skeleton and the salivary glands will also be covered, as well as the innervation of the teeth.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge

After completion of the course, the student should be able to describe:

  • The normal structures of dental and oral tissues.
  • The normal morphology of the human teeth.
  • The normal development of teeth, their eruption and exfoliation as well as the most common congenital malformations of the face.
  • The most used nomenclature system for human teeth.
  • The nerve supply of teeth in detail as the basis for the safe administration of local infiltration anaesthesia.

Skills

After completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Identify and name human deciduous and permanent teeth using the most used nomenclature system for human teeth.
  • Good knowlegde of the normal anatomy (microscopic and macroscopic) of the dental and masticatory apparatus.
  • Communicate within the health team by using anatomical concepts and definitions.

Teaching and learning methods
Lectures, seminars, mandatory exercises and problem-solving seminars.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Practical course in tooth anatomy and seminars. A practical test in dental anatomy course has to be approved before students can take the final exam.
