Retake an exam

Are you going to retake the exam, are you dissatisfied with your grade, or have you used up three exam attempts? What happens if you were sick or had a valid absence? And what do you do if you withdraw or fail the exam? You will find answers to your questions and help with what to do next on this page.

Register for the exam in Studentweb

Deadlines for registering for the exam:

  • 1 September for the fall semester.
  • 1 February for the spring semester.

Retake the exam

You can retake the exam up to three times. You register for the exam in Studentweb under "Active courses".

Apply to retake the exam an additional time

You must apply to take the exam more than three times

The faculty will process the application as quickly as possible, and usually within four weeks.

In your application, you must explain why you need to take the exam an additional time beyond your allowed three attempts. You must attach documentation if you believe this will help in your application.

Resit in case of valid absence, withdrawal or failing your exam

A resit exam is a new exam in a course or an extension of the submission deadline for students who have a valid absence from the exam.

A resit exam will only be conducted if at least one student has a valid absence from the exam.

Information about and application form for valid absence from exams.

What to do to be able to resit an exam?

It varies from course to course whether you are registered for the resit exam by the faculty, whether you register yourself, or whether you must apply to be registered .

You can find information about what applies to you on the course page in Mitt UiB.

If you must apply, do this at the same time as you report a valid absence.

Who can resit an exam?

You are only entitled to take a resit exam if you have a valid absence from the exam.

If you withdraw or fail an ordinary exam, you may be entitled to a resit exam. There are faculty-specific rules for the right resit an exam.

Rules and exceptions

Rules for additional exam attempts or retaking an exam

UiB's study regulations determine the rules for additional exam attempts and for retake exams . The entire chapter 8 on exam attempts is particularly relevant. There may also be separate rules that apply to the faculty to which the course belongs.

During the assessment semester, the course description found on uib.no/en/courses often states what applies to the course in question.

Rules for retaking bachelor's and master's theses

You can only resubmit your bachelor's project/thesis and master's project/thesis if you failed it the first time. You only have one retry.

The rules for this are set out in the study regulations, ยง 8-1 (2).

When do I use an exam attempt?

You use one exam attempt when you are still registered for the exam after the withdrawal deadline has passed. The deadline for withdrawing from the exam can be found in Studentweb. The withdrawal deadline is normally 14 days before the first exam in the course.

You do not use an attempt if you

  • have missing or failed mandatory work requirements.
  • have registered a valid absence from the exam.
Exceptions to the rule of three exam attempts

The faculty may decide that you only have two exam attempts in courses that include internships, fieldwork, and executive exams. The same may apply to courses that you have already passed.

The faculty's regulations and sometimes the course description, at uib.no/en/courses, states whether there are only two exam attempts in the course.
