Torjus Midtgarden's work centers on Pragmatism and its contemporary relevance for Social and Political Theory. He has recently studied how Classical Pragmatism (John Dewey), as well as Neo-Pragmatism (Robert Brandom), draws on perspectives from Hegel’s philosophy, and he has explored ways in which Dewey’s Pragmatism bears on current discussions in Critical Social Theory (Axel Honneth, James Bohman). Together with German and French colleagues he currently partakes in explorations of how Dewey’s Pragmatism may be seen as congenial to Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach but also of ways in which it may critically complement the latter by stressing that individuals’ capabilities depend on collective achievements and capabilities and on transactions with non-human nature.
