Research
My research revolves around three interrelated areas: stereotypes and social perception, attitudes to immigrants and immigration, and misperceptions of norms.
I am interested in how social groups are stereotyped in Norwegian society, how gender stereotypes interact with other social category memberships, the interaction between gender and sexual orientation in the prediction of sexual harassment experiences, and how social perception is shaped by both features of the target and the perceiver.
Drawing on data from the Norwegian Citizen Panel, I have collaborated with other social scientists to understand Norwegians’ reactions to climate migrants, how attitudes to immigration are impacted by influxes of asylum-seekers, and the impact of studying attitudes to immigration as a local or national phenomenon.
Most recently, I am developing a series of studies on misperceptions of norms. I have previously found that Norwegians perceive others to harbor more negative feelings towards asylum-seekers than they report for themselves and that these misperceptions are related to intergroup behaviors. Currently, I am exploring misperceptions of norms concerning help-seeking for mental health problems and misperceptions of others’ attitudes to sexual harassment.
