Senter for diabetesforskning
Diabetes affects approximately 5% of the Norwegian population. Its prevalence is rising at an epidemic rate, and the disease is serious due to its many complications. The Center for Diabetes Research gathers research groups from the University of Bergen and Haukeland University Hospital generating new knowledge and applying novel clinical approaches to diabetes.
About the research centre
The main goal is to develop new diagnostic tools that can be tested in large registries and biobanks and subsequently used in clinical practice. This will make it possible to tailor diabetes treatment to each individual patient. To achieve this goal, the center is working to:
- Identify new genetic risk factors for diabetes and diabetes complications
- Uncover new disease mechanisms involved in diabetes
- Develop and promote personalized treatment of diabetes

Research groups
Six research groups participate in the Center for Diabetes Research
- The group led by Pål Njølstad is working to improve the clinical characterization of diabetes and to analyze health registries and biobanks to identify new diabetes genes and risk factors.
- The group led by Helge Ræder isolates adult stem cells and cultivates pancreatic cells for studies of diabetes and pancreatic insufficiency.
- The group led by Simona Chera studies mechanisms of cell fate in the context of regenerative strategies in biological systems.
- The group led by Anders Molven uses large-scale genetic analyses on various patient samples and tests new genetic variants in families and registries.
- The group led by Stefan Johansson employs various approaches to examine how genetic variation contributes to disease.
- The group led by Valeriya Lyssenko investigates the many complications associated with diabetes.
