The first day started with presentations on the topic of Foundational Data Science, with Pekka Parviainen as session chair:

  • Stein Andreas Bethuelsen on "A probabilist's look on data science"
  • Ricardo Guimarães on "Learning and reasoning with Knowledge Graphs and Ontologies"
  • Madhumita Kundu on "An approximation alghorithm for learning Bayesian Network"
  • Laura Ann Garrison on "A Visual Data Science Primer"

Thereafter, we enjoyed a session on Teaching Data Science, with Yushu Li & Hans Julius Skaug as session chairs.

  • Truls Pedersen on "How to programe an artificial agent"
  • Inge Jonassen on "Plas on a new siv-ing program in data science in Informatics, UiB"
  • Johan Lyhagen on "Statistics education at Uppsala University: personal reflections on where we are and where we are going"
  • Magnus Svendsen Nerheim on "Tools and approaches to teaching and enhance learning in data science and beyond"

Furthermore, informative discussion groups delved into details of topics relevant for data science and/or CEDAS in particular. Before dinner, participants were able to take part in both indoor and outdoor activities. Participants either enjoyed the beautiful weather, went swimming in the pool, relaxed in the sun, could take part in a CEDAS quiz (see winners in the picture below), or went hiking.

The second day was equally productive. After breakfest, the theme for the talks was Data Science Applications, with Tom Michoel as session chair:

  • Julia Romanowska on "Using full national history of drug usage to search for disease causes and cures"
  • Ramin Hasibi on "Geomatric Machine Learning and Applications in Biology and Computer Vision"
  • Jonas Andersson on "Mixed Frequency Data in a (S, s) pricing model"

After a short coffee break, the discussion groups presented their findings on ethics in data science, teaching data science, building an even better community of data scientists in CEDAS, and how future events can lead to more cooperation. We then went on a walk and talk around the hotel, where the participants spent their time reflecting on the event as a whole, as well as the talks and discussions. We finished with some cinnamon buns in the sun before the bus brought us back to Bergen. Overall, the general mood was one of positivity, efficiency, and initiative regarding future work on both foundational and applied data science - locally and nationally.

Clearly, we look forward to more fruitful collaboration across multiple disciplines in data science.
