New faculty member
We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Ryan Portner to the Department of Earth Science (Geochemistry/Geobiology group) and the Centre for Deep Sea Research as our newest Associate Professor.

Ryan joins CDeepSea from California, where he has been based for the past ten years. Prior to that, he lived on the East Coast of the US and in Australia, where he completed his graduate and postdoctoral work.
A volcanologist with experience in igneous petrology and sedimentology, Ryan’s research focuses on understanding the eruption dynamics and chemical evolution of submarine volcanoes. With his students, he works on active mid-ocean ridge and arc systems, as well as ancient successions from the rock record. He will be exploring the seafloor with us here at the Centre for Deep Sea Research. Ryan will also be teaching classroom and field courses.
