Join us, either in person or online, as we discuss this timely and controversial topic. Professor Bettina Husebø from SEFAS will take part in an open panel debate at Haukeland University Hospital, together with Espen Gamlund, Professor of Philosophy, and Sören Koch, Professor of Law.

The event is organized by the Clinical Ethics Committee at Helse Bergen in collaboration with the Bergen Center for Ethics and Priority Setting (BCEPS).

When: December 3, 12:15–13:00
Where: Birkhaugsalen, Main building (Sentralblokka), Haukeland University Hospital or via Teams. (Teams link)
Who: The event is open to everyone.

What: Assisted dying touches on some of the most fundamental questions at the intersection of the individual, society, and healthcare: What does it mean to end life in a dignified way? Who should have the authority to make such decisions at the end of life? And how can we, as a society, find a fair balance between patient autonomy, the need for care, and legal safeguards?

We also know that healthcare professionals encounter these issues: How can and should they respond when patients express plans for assisted suicide abroad or request medical documentation to bring to Switzerland?

Duration: 45 minutes, including time for audience questions.

Language: In Norwegian.

Panel:

  • Espen Gamlund, Professor of Philosophy, University of Bergen. Works on ethics and moral philosophy, with a particular interest in practical ethics.
  • Bettina Sandgathe Husebø, Professor, University of Bergen. Researches palliative care and pain management, focusing on seriously ill and vulnerable patients.
  • Sören Koch, Professor of Law, University of Bergen. Specialist in legal history, legal culture, and comparative law.

The discussion will be moderated by Ingrid Miljeteig, Chair of the Clinical Ethics Committee at Helse Bergen.

Welcome!
